EKK Eagle Industry supplies environmental conservation-oriented high-performance, high-quality seal products and mechatronics products for functionally important modules used in the automotive industry amongst other industries. EKK started production of water pump mechanical seals in 1957, mechanical seals for car air-conditioning compressors in 1959, and lip seals for car air-conditioning compressors in 1985. These products, manufactured by integrated production systems covering all processes from material development to manufacture, have been highly regarded in terms of both performance and quality. EKK has acquired significant technical expertise through the research and development of seal technology, the company’s core technology. Since the 1970s, making optimal use of that expertise, we have developed and mass-produced ever-evolving automotive functional components, such as mechatronics products (solenoid valves etc.), actuators and valves. Eagle Industry consistently provides optimally designed mechanical products to meet the latest application and functional needs of the times. One of our basic production principles is to conduct production at the optimum location. In response to our customers’ business expansion abroad, we have taken necessary measures actively. In addition, we have established our production sites and sales offices in various parts of the world, including Asia and Europe, to supply our products consistently. With smart innovations like EKK’s surface texturing technology, a technology developed from the 1980s, EKK achieves to reduce friction by 80-90% at superior sealing capability. In order to overcome range anxiety of electric vehicles and to support affordable electric mobility, highly efficient electric motors are necessary. In this topic, thermal management of the electric motor play a key role. Several thermal management solutions are currently on the market or in development, where water coolant, di-electric oil or refrigerant enable efficient dissipation of heat at the rotor and stator of the electric motor. GlideX™ sealing technology provides excellent and reliable sealing solutions for all thermal management solution, where the extreme low friction losses lead to considerable efficiency improvements and in the end effect EV range increase. A problem the industry is facing are is a reliable supply chain for magnet materials. As a solution for this problem external excited synchronous motor technology gains more popularity. This technology needs a proper electric power transmission to the rotor, compared to magnet containing motors. The modular design of the EKK power transmission system is specially developed to adapt to the specific requirements of our customers. The long term expertise in tribology allows us to create an optimal balance between safe current conduction and friction losses. Additionally we provide a complete solution of brush, slip ring and optional features.

Emitec Technologies GmbH is the result of 37 successful years in exhaust aftertreatment technology. It all began in 1986 as a small group of engineers challenged themselves in order to find an industrial application in the automotive market for the highly advanced thin foil brazing technology, which was derived from the nuclear plant industry. At first only few automotive OEMs adopted Emitec’s innovative metal substrate designs for catalytic converter. Back then, the decision criteria were mainly driven by the superior mechanical durability of metallic substrates as well as their exceptional thermodynamic performance, which was key for high power engines. As the brand became more and more known across the world and the production process evolved from manual production into highly automated robotized lines, the yearly output dramatically increased from few thousand parts per year into today’s 20+ million substrates/year. Emitec is the only metal substrate manufacturer which has in its own assets a world class testing center (located in Eisenach – Germany), consisting of clima controlled chassis dyno engine test benches as well as clima controlled roller dyno for the most modern emission legislation standards. Two production plants in Germany and one production plant in India all sharing the same highest quality and technological standards, allow for a reliable and consistent supply base for every OEM. Our vast experience in metallic substrate and production technology know-how is today the basis to expand Emitec’s footprint beyond the pure automotive sector: our products are already used in stationary power production as well as in the exciting area of new energies such as H2-Production, Solar-Power and Air Filtering.

The main objectives of the project are: 1. To achieve over 10% energy saving (tank to wheel (TtW)), excluding effects of plug-in hybrids) and correspondent CO2 reduction 2. Realisation of robust ICE engine technology for use of future fuels(HVO, dual fuel mixtures), to achieve a major (>90%) CO2 reduction well to wheel 3. To achieve an internal combustion engine performance which reaches a 50% target in terms of peak thermal efficiency 4. Aftertreatment systems integrated into hybrid powertrains with advanced engines 5. To achieve a multiscale backward/forward simulation framework to support the design and development of efficient powertrains, including hybrids 6. To demonstrate the optimal combination of technologies by validation on engine test rigs/ test track/on road with the realisation of demonstrator engine, drivelines and vehicles with the key innovations implemented Altogether, the project outcomes will accelerate the transition from fossil-based fuels to alternative and renewable fuels and to a strong reduction of fossil-based CO2 and air pollutant emissions in Europe.

UNICARagil is a German flagship project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). It combines the expertise of eight leading German universities and eight selected German industry specialists in the field of Automated Driving. Starting in 2018, they collaborate in this four-year project, to establish disruptive, modular hardware and software architectures specifically made for automated and driverless vehicle concepts. The goal is to decisively shape the mobility of the future by rethinking established architectures. Members of the consortium are RWTH Aachen University, TU Braunschweig, TU Darmstadt, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Technical University of Munich, University of Stuttgart, University of Ulm and University of Passau as well as the industrial partners ATLATEC GmbH, flyXdrive GmbH, iMAR Navigation GmbH, IPG Automotive GmbH, Schaeffler Technologies AG & Co. KG and VIRES Simulation Technology GmbH. The project is also supported by the associated partners Maxion Wheels Holding GmbH and Valeo Schalter und Sensoren GmbH. UNICARagil is funded by the BMBF with a total of 32 million euros and will run for 64 months. During the first phase of the project, the project’s more than 100 scientists and engineers started establishing concepts based on the latest research in the fields of automated and connected driving, electromobility and computer science. The interdisciplinary and agile approach lead to a modular and scalable vehicle platform for automated vehicles which can be easily shaped according to many different use-cases. The vehicles are supported by a control center that allows for human interventions and a cloud backend supporting the vehicles’ functionality. Other key areas of research are the development of generic sensor modules for environment perception, a flexibly expandable and updatable software and hardware architecture, innovative dynamics modules that allow completely new forms of movement in road traffic and a sensor drone informing the vehicles about their environment. Based on the developed concepts, four fully automated vehicles will be designed and prototyped during the project – autoELF: A vehicle for personal use, autoSHUTTLE: A supplement to public transport, autoTAXI: A robotaxi for individual mobility-as-a-service and autoCARGO: A delivery pod for the automated transportation of goods.
